Fingering charts

Use the charts below to see which holes to close, half-cover, or leave open for each note. Turn Half holes on to include chromatic fingerings, or off to show only the basic notes.

Registers

Shinobue uses different registers depending on how the air is blown. The fingering may stay the same while the sounding octave changes.

筒音Tsutsune

The lowest note of the flute, played with all finger holes closed. Tsutsune is a single note rather than a register.

呂音Ryō-on

The lower register. Notes are traditionally written with kanji numerals: 一二三四五六七.

甲音Kan-on

The next register above Ryō-on. Notes are written with Arabic numerals: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7.

大甲音Dai-Kan-on

The highest register used in this chart. Notes are written with dotted Arabic numerals. Dai-Kan-on uses stronger, more focused air and includes several special fingerings.

Changing register is not simply a matter of opening more holes. The player changes the speed, focus and angle of the air to make the flute resonate in a higher mode.

Meri and Kari

メリMeri and カリKari are techniques used to adjust the pitch by changing the angle between the flute and the air stream.

メリMeri

Tilting the flute inward lowers the pitch. The sound usually becomes slightly darker and more covered.

カリKari

Tilting the flute outward raises the pitch. The sound usually becomes brighter and more open.

A half-hole is different from Meri/Kari

A half-hole changes the fingering used to produce a chromatic note. Meri/Kari adjust the pitch produced by that fingering. This means a half-hole note can still be played slightly meri or slightly kari.

In the tuner

メ ↓ means the pitch is below the note, on the Meri side.

カ ↑ means the pitch is above the note, on the Kari side.

The cents meter shows how far the pitch is from the centre. When the note is in tune, neither Meri nor Kari needs to be active.
